RENO, NV – Nick Poulakidas was a Native Nevadan who worked for the Washoe County School district for more than 30 years. He was a teacher at Robert Mitchell Elementary School, Veterans Memorial School, and Sparks Intermediate School. He was also the principal of Mary Lee Nichols Elementary School and Lincoln Park Elementary School for 24 years. Mr. Poulakidas died in 1981, after suffering a heart attack at a dance at the Nevada PTA Convention in Ely. It was only natural that someone who contributed so much to the county’s youth be recognized for all his hard work.

At a capacity of 745 students, this $37.25M, 2-story, 82,500-square-foot elementary school, has relieved overcrowding at many of the elementary schools in the south Reno area. It’s the first-of-its-kind and stands as the prototype for multiple schools underway in the Washoe County School District. This school and all future Washoe County Schools will be built for increased capacity to help support this high-growth area.

In several previous projects, The Washoe County School District had been experiencing costly concrete flooring issues which resulted in cracking and moisture testing failures. The school district decided to implement SINAK’s VC-5 for this project to avoid the nearly $13/sqft in moisture remediation costs they had been paying on previous projects. This was the first school in the district to implement SINAK’S VC-5.

By implementing VC-5, the school district saved more than $50,000 in the kitchen area and is protected with the most comprehensive moisture and alkalinity 20-year warranty in the industry. After such great success, Washoe County decided to make this project the basis of design for the district and all future projects.

There are 28 standard classrooms, one “Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math (STEAM)” Lab, three “Hub” spaces for collaborative/project learning, modern security, energy-efficient design including a geothermal heat exchange system, and drought-tolerant landscaping.

As the CMAR for the initial school, Q&D Construction helped optimize the constructability and budget to include the cost and liability savings SINAK was able to provide. Q&D is also the builder for two more elementary schools in the district – John C. Bohach and Cold Springs Elementary School – which were competitively bid.

SINAK VC-5 consistently helps projects come in under budget by reducing division 9 remediation costs and putting time back into the schedule. H + K Architects, the architect of record for this project, are not new to SINAK’s high quality products and knew they could count on SINAK to help fix the problems previously plaguing the school district. SINAK is extremely happy to have been part of another great project and look forward to continued success in the upcoming Washoe County projects.
